On Wednesday, June 3, at approximately 3 a.m., the Villa Park Police Department was investigating a catalytic converter theft when officers reportedly observed suspects actively committing additional thefts in the area. The police department did not provide the exact location of where officers observed the suspects.
“Officers from the Villa Park Police Department, with assistance from neighboring law enforcement agencies, quickly coordinated efforts to apprehend the suspects,” noted the department in a statement. “Upon attempting to stop the suspect vehicle, the occupants fled the scene at a high rate of speed.”
During the pursuit, officers successfully deployed stop sticks, disabling both front tires of the fleeing vehicle. Despite the damaged tires, the vehicle continued for a short distance before ultimately coming to a stop. According to the Villa Park Police Department, several suspects were taken into custody during the initial response. One suspect, however, remained outstanding.
“Through the continued efforts of law enforcement personnel, the Elmhurst Police Department successfully located and took the outstanding suspect into custody,” stated the Villa Park Police Department. “As a result, all suspects involved in this incident are now in custody. The investigation remains ongoing as detectives continue to gather evidence and determine the full scope of the suspects’ criminal activity. Additional charges may be forthcoming.”
The Villa Park department’s statement specifically thanked the Elmhurst Police Department for its assistance in pursuing the suspects in the incident.
“The Villa Park Police Department would like to extend its sincere appreciation to the Elmhurst Police Department and all assisting agencies for their outstanding cooperation, professionalism, and dedication. Their assistance was instrumental in ensuring the safe apprehension of all suspects and the successful outcome of this investigation.”
At 4:25 a.m. on June 3, the Elmhurst Police Department issued an alert that police were searching for a theft suspect who ran from a vehicle being pursued by officers on I-290. That vehicle exited onto St. Charles Road.
According to the alert, two suspects were seen running on foot north from St. Charles Road and Fair Street. One suspect was located and taken into custody by officers. The alert stated that authorities were searching the area with police K9s and public safety drones.
At 8:15 a.m. on June 3, the Elmhurst Police Department released an update that it had determined the second subject was no longer in Elmhurst. The update stated that the Villa Park and Addison departments were the primary investigating agencies, as the theft incident originated in their jurisdictions.
At noon, the Elmhurst Police Department provided an update stating that the second suspect had been located in suburban Cook County and was in custody.
