This summer, the Bensenville Park District is mixing science with creativity and fun through a series of hands-on STEAM programs designed to spark curiosity and inspire discovery.
Families of all ages are invited to explore the science behind everyday activities while creating tasty treats and unique take-home projects. Each program combines learning and entertainment, giving participants an opportunity to experiment, create and discover how science plays a role in the world around them.
"These programs show that science doesn't have to happen in a laboratory to be exciting," said Superintendent of Recreation Anne Popek. "Participants will be making ice cream, creating bouncy balls and churning butter while learning about scientific concepts through hands-on experiences that are both educational and fun."
The summer STEAM series begins with Shake it Up, scheduled from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 7, in the Willow Room at the Deer Grove Leisure Center. Participants will create their own ice cream while exploring the science behind one of America's favorite desserts. Along the way, they will learn how ice cream combines solid ice crystals, liquid milk fat and tiny air bubbles to create its unique texture and flavor. The fee is $12 or $10 for in-district patrons.
The fun continues with Let's Bounce from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, July 21. Participants will mix, shape and customize their own colorful bouncy balls while experimenting with colors, glitter and textures. The hands-on activity provides a creative introduction to material science while allowing participants to take home a one-of-a-kind toy. The fee is $12 ($10 in-district).
The final program, Butter Up, will take place from 6-7 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 4. Participants will shake their way to homemade butter while learning where butter comes from and how simple ingredients transform through motion and science. Afterward, they will enjoy sampling their creations. The fee is $15 or $12 for in-district patrons.
All programs will be held in the Willow Room at the Deer Grove Leisure Center, 1000 W. Wood St., Bensenville.
Registration is now open. To register, visit the Deer Grove Leisure Center or call 630-766-7015.
