The York girls cross-country team fared well in a pair of early-season invitationals.

The Dukes won the nine-team St. Charles East Leavey Invitational and took sixth at the Lake Park Invitational.

At the St. Charles East Leavey meet held at Settler’s Hill Golf Club in Batavia, York edged Barrington by a single point, 53-54, to win the team championship.

York junior Karlin Janowski won the individual Leavey title with an impressive 16:23.50 time. St. Charles North junior Kara Glenn was a distant second at 16:49.40, nearly 26 seconds behind.

Senior Stella Rosso was eighth at 18:38.20, while junior Dehlia Bernardi was 21st with a time of 19:35.0 on the three-mile layout. Junior Alli Buhrfiend was 22nd in 19:36.30 and freshman Eleanor Berry rounded out York’s scoring with a time of 19:41.70 (23rd place).

Sophomore Emma Schweitzer finished 25th in 19:48.80, while junior Amelia Crotty was 30th at 20:08.60. Senior Julia Weseloh was 40th in 20:55.30.

York’s average time was 18:46 and its split between runners was 3:18. Barrington held a slight 7-8 points edge for the first two scoring runners and an 11-14 edge on the third scoring runner, but York’s fourth and fifth runners had 31 combined scoring points compared to Barrington’s 36, which proved to be the difference.

York was fourth at the frosh-soph level with 78 points. Sophomore Citali Zamora-Garcia was seventh for the Dukes in 20:56.70 over three miles. Freshman Caroline Stotts was 11th at 21:48.50, while sophomore Bridget Honquest was 17th in 22:21.70. Freshman Isla Reedy was 25th in 23:26 and freshman London Howard was 27th at 23:40.80.

In the open race held on the shorter course at Settler’s Run, York was second with 48 points. Barrington won it with 40 points. Junior Taylor Smith was fourth with a time of 17:28.10, while senior Katie Cifelli was fifth in 17:35.20. Senior Morgan Frost was eighth at 17:48.10. Senior Ella Braun was 15th at 18:29, while junior Josephine Seyforth was 16th at 18:39.10.

York was sixth at the varsity level at the Lake Park Invitational at the Lake Park East Campus in Medinah on a three-mile layout. The Dukes finished with 172 points in the 15-team event. Chicago Lane Tech won the team title with 57 points.

Janowski again was dominant winning the individual title in 16:25.6. St. Charles North’s Glenn was second at 16:51.7, more than 26 seconds behind.

“Karlin won both the St. Charles Invite and Lake Park Invite with blistering times,” York coach Lauren DeAngelis said.

Schweitzer was 40th in 19:23.1, while Berry took 44th in 19:30.4. Buhrfiend was 51st with a time of 19:33.5, while Rosso was 58th in 19:46.9. Bernardi took 60th in 19:50.2, while Crotty was 71st at 20:17.9 and Zamora-Garcia was 74th in 20:30.

“This is a younger team with minimal varsity experience,” DeAngelis said. “They are packing up well, but we need to focus on getting out a little quicker on the varsity level.”

DeAngelis has been impressed with the progress of Schweitzer, Buhrfiend and Bernardi of late.

“Emma was our No. 2 runner at Lake Park in her first varsity race,” she said. “She has a lot of potential ahead of her. This is Allison’s first year on varsity and she has been running very consistently. She has a great work ethic, dedication and has stepped up for this team. Dehlia is our team captain who has done an exceptional job leading this team, creating a positive and supportive environment. Her training is going well. She has been sick most of the season, but once healthy, will be one to watch.”

In the JV race at Lake Park, Smith was 39th with a time of 21:04.3, while Weseloh ran 21:06.4 and finished 41st. Frost was 48th with a time of 21:17.4. Cifelli was 51st at 21:30.3 and sophomore Bryce Krietsch was 54th at 21:36.0. York finished fifth as a team at the JV level.

Sophomore Taylor Jarosz was York’s top finisher in the two-mile open race, finishing 86th with a time of 15:53.2.
