The York boys golf team has put itself in a key position in the race for the West Suburban Conference Silver Division title.
York recorded a recent 148-152 WSC Silver dual meet victory over Hinsdale Central at Chicago Highlands Club in Westchester.
The win bumped York to 8-1 overall in dual-meet action and 3-1 in WSC Silver play.
“We had a big win over a very talented Hinsdale Central team,” York coach Jim Borel said. “Our team is very up and down the roster. Our varsity team has only one dual-meet loss this year against Lyons Township, so we’re in good shape to compete for a conference championship in two weeks.”
Against Hinsdale Central, senior Grant Hickman shot even-par 36, while senior Will Huber and sophomore Brian Huber each shot 1-over 37. Sophomore William Buhrfiend shot a 2-over 38. Senior Gage Jacobs and sophomore Henry Cecil each shot 39s for strong rounds that York didn’t need to use on the scorecard.
“The kids are working hard and we’re excited for the opportunities in the coming weeks,” Borel said.
In earlier action, York recorded a 143-169 non-conference win against Riverside-Brookfield. Cecil shot a 1-under 34 at Riverside Country Club, while Buhrfiend shot 35 and Colin Pittman shot a 36. Evan Link added a 38 to round out the York scoresheet.
In a 145-165 non-conference triumph against Wheaton North, Hickman posted a 1-under 35 at Arrowhead in Wheaton, while Will Huber and Jacobs each shot 36. Donovan O’Connor and Buhrfiend each shot 38 and Will Kellam had a 39.
In a 151-163 WSC Silver win against Oak Park-River Forest at River Forest Country Club in Elmhurst, Brian Huber and Jacobs each shot even-par 36, while O’Connor shot 39 and Pittman posted a 40.
York lost 152-157 to Lyons Township in WSC Silver play. Pittman shot 37, while Brian Huber, Kellam and Will Huber each shot 40.
York also shot a 293 at the Loyola invitational at Wilmette Golf Club where Will Huber shot a 2-under 68 to earn medalist honors. Pittman shot a 73. Hickman shot 74, while Jacobs and Brian Huber each shot 78. O’Connor shot a 79.
In York’s three 18-hole tournaments, it has recorded scores of 277, 293 and 298.
“Senior Grant Hickman, Will Huber, Gage Jacobs, Donovan O’Connor and Will Kellam are all great golfers and better leaders,” Borel said. “The previous week was basically a wash due to heat and storms, but our kids did not miss a beat and played well (this past week).”
York was averaging a 148 for nine holes. Hickman was tops on the team at 36.5, while Will Huber was at 36.78. Jacobs was at 37.17, Pittman was averaging 37.5, while Cecil was at 37.63. Brian Huber was averaging 38.0 for nine.
