September at Fischer Farm offers fall fun, learning and Harvest Fest

Posted

Fall is ready to take root at Fischer Farm, 16W680 Old Grand Ave. in Bensenville, with a September lineup packed with seasonal adventures, hands-on learning and family fun culminating with Harvest Fest on Sept. 26.

The month’s activities begin Sept. 1 with the Harvest Scavenger Hunt, a free, self-paced activity available from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily throughout the fall season. Visitors can explore the farm while searching high and low for items listed on the scavenger hunt playing card. Complete the card to earn a prize. No registration is required, making it an easy way for families and friends to enjoy some fresh air, fall colors and farmyard fun together.

“September is one of our favorite times of year at Fischer Farm because there is always something happening,” said Fischer Farm Program Supervisor Katrina Frank. “Whether families are exploring the farm during the Harvest Scavenger Hunt, discovering the science behind owls or joining us for Harvest Fest, there are plenty of opportunities to learn, play and make some great fall memories.”

On Saturday, Sept. 5, adults can learn the basics of raising chickens at Backyard Chickens 101, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. The program is designed for those interested in starting a backyard flock and raising chickens for fresh eggs in the spring. The program is for ages 18 and older and costs $18, or $12 for in-district patrons. Children ages 17 and younger may attend free with a paid adult; no enrollment is required for accompanying children.

Young scientists can explore the mysterious world of nocturnal predators during the Owl Pellet Lab from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 13. Participants ages 7-13 will dissect real owl pellets, uncover tiny prey-animal skeletons and learn about owl hunting habits, digestion and the food chain. All materials are provided. The program fee is $18, or $12 for in-district patrons.

All ages are invited to join the Pico de Gallo Workshop from 1:30-2:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 19. Participants will learn to prepare fresh Pico de Gallo from scratch using farm-fresh ingredients while discovering the flavors and traditions behind one of Mexico’s best-known dishes. All materials are provided. The fee is $15, or $10 for in-district patrons.

The changing season takes center stage during Fall Equinox at Fischer Farm from 5 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 22. Participants ages 7-13 will discover the history and science behind the fall equinox while creating leaf art and making candles during this autumn-themed adventure. The program costs $12, or $8 for in-district patrons.

The month will culminate with the Bensenville Park District’s annual Harvest Fest from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 26, at Fischer Farm. Sponsored by Grand Subaru, the free-admission, family-friendly celebration will feature live music, arts and crafts, animal encounters, seasonal activities and festive food offerings. Admission to Harvest Fest is free, while food and some activities require the purchase of tickets.
