Lombard Police Department joins statewide Labor Day traffic safety campaign

Posted

The Lombard Police Department is joining more than 200 law enforcement agencies across Illinois for the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over,” “Drive High Get a DUI” and “Click It or Ticket” campaigns this Labor Day. Now through the early morning hours of Sept. 8, officers will increase patrols to help keep impaired drivers off the road, enforce seat belt laws and address other dangerous driving behaviors.

“We want everyone to enjoy the Labor Day weekend and get home safely,” said Police Lt. Tom Balsitis. “If your plans include alcohol, cannabis or anything else that can impair your ability to drive, plan for a safe ride home before you head out.”

Throughout the campaign, officers will conduct high-visibility enforcement focused on impaired driving and seat belt violations, as well as other traffic violations that put motorists at risk.

Drivers are reminded that impairment can result from alcohol, cannabis and other drugs, including some prescription and over-the-counter medications. Anyone who is impaired should never get behind the wheel and should instead arrange for a sober driver, rideshare or other safe transportation.

Seat belts also remain one of the most effective ways to reduce the risk of serious injury or death in a crash. Illinois law requires drivers and passengers, in both the front and back seats, to wear seat belts.

The Labor Day enforcement campaign is supported by federal highway safety funds administered by the Illinois Department of Transportation (IDOT) and conducted in partnership with the Illinois State Police and local law enforcement agencies across the state. The effort is reinforced by IDOT’s “It’s Not a Game” public awareness campaign, which highlights the serious consequences of impaired and other dangerous driving behaviors.
