Library evacuated after reported bomb threat; no suspicious devices found

On Monday, May 11, at 1:18 p.m. the Elmhurst police and fire departments responded to the Elmhurst Public Library at 125 S. Prospect Avenue for a reported bomb threat. According to the Elmhurst Police Department, officers learned that a staff member received a telephone call from a suspect who said there were bombs in the library.

As a precaution, library staff members safely evacuated the building. Officers swept the library to ensure it was clear of patrons and staff before securing a perimeter around the building. The DuPage
County Sheriff’s Office responded with an explosives detection K9 unit. The interior and exterior of the building were searched. No suspicious devices were found and the building was determined safe.

At 4:30 p.m., the library resumed normal operations as the threat was found to be false.

The initial investigation indicated that the threatening phone call originated outside the State of
Illinois. The incident is under active investigation by the Elmhurst Police Department and its federal law enforcement partners.

“The Elmhurst Police Department thanks the DuPage County Sheriff’s Office for their assistance and the staff of Elmhurst Public Library for swiftly initiating their emergency response plan,” stated the police department in a statement issued on the day of the incident.
